Leif Valen
I already knew that Leif Valen was a damn good rider, thanks to several videos by Mark Eaton. But I've never spoken with him at any length before this interview — I expected him to be pretty friendly, soft-spoken, and in general a cool guy with no crappy attitude. Lucky for me, this turned out to be the case...
eWire: We'll start with the basics, how old you are and how long you've been riding.
Leif: Um, I don't want to say how old I am because it's...it's not good (laughter). So, I don't know...I'm not dead yet. That's what I'll say is my age: alive.

How long have you been on a bike?
I've been riding about 11 years. I ride a bit of everything, you know?

How'd you get started? Any one particular person get you into it?
No, not really. Nobody really got me into it because I lived in the mountains and didn't really have any neighbors or anything. I rode motorcycles first, and I saw somebody riding by the motorcycle shop my dad worked at. That's what sparked it I guess, and of course just looking at magazines. I moved to Arizona my senior year in high school, finished high school out there. That's where I met Ells. Then later I saw Dorkin' videos and couldn't believe it. From then on, Kevin [Jones] really got me stoked; he and all the Plywood Hoods.

Do you still see those guys? [Leif lives in York, PA]
Yeah. Eaton moved to Philly, but Kevin's still there and I ride with him. I'm probably going to make a Kevin shirt with this little company I'm trying to do.

What's the company?
Contraption. Right now it's shirts and force field things — Gyro covers.

Are you still sponsored by Play?
Yeah.

Does making those Gyro covers conflict with your contract with Hal (Brindley)?
No. The reason I started that was because Hal is selling Play, and I designed that thing and I didn't want somebody else to buy it — I kinda wanted to keep that. And it's fun, you know? I don't expect to make a lot of money doing it, it's just something to do.
