Jets to Brazil, The Love Scene

Somerville Theater; Somerville, MA

May 23, 2001

I know I'm old: I really enjoyed this show at the Somerville Theater. A relatively early start, seats, good sound, and no smoking. Oh yeah, and good music!

Opening the show was a band called The Love Scene. They had a 60's garage-band sound mixed with early Jam and some Revolver-era Beatles. The songs were fast and catchy — in short, I dug 'em.

Jets to Brazil The first time I saw Jets To Brazil I had never heard any of their music but they still blew me away. The last time I saw them (before the mellower Four Cornered Night was released) I almost fell asleep: they put on a pretty late mid-week show, and it didn't rock as much as the previous show. Hell, Blake was sitting down playing keyboards during some parts!

So I went into this show ready to kick back, relax, and enjoy some mellow JTB vibes while Blake tickled the ivories. But I was happy to hear a lack of mellow and a return to rock. There were a couple sit-down keyboard tunes, but there were fewer than last time; most of the show was spent playing some of the best stuff from their two albums. On top of that, they also played three new songs — if they're any indication of the new album as a whole (whenever it comes out) will probably sound more like Orange Rhyming Dictionary than Night. Sounds good to me.
